  • Eric Torres (Twitter: @erictorres) is our as our AIGA Arizona Member of the Month for November. Thank you Eric for all your all his great contributions to our chapter and volunteer efforts! Below is a transcript of the "live" interview on Twitter:

AIGAarizona: Time for the AIGA Member of the Month Twinterview! This month we would like to recognize @erictorres for being a great volunteer! Welcome.

erictorres: Thanks so much! I appreciate the honor.

AIGAarizona: So Eric, what do you get out of being an AIGA volunteer and member?

erictorres: I get to meet with peers and learn from their successes and failures. Most of all it motivates me to be more productive.

AIGAarizona: It really is a great way to meet other designers and cool people! What inspired you to become a designer in the first place?

erictorres: Soaking up pop culture as a kid. I did lots of reading, writing & drawing - Mom kept me busy with creative stuff. (And chores.)

AIGAarizona: That's awesome! What a cool mom. :) Is there a particularly area of design that is your favorite? (web, print, motion)

erictorres: Hmmm. I have a soft spot for print, yet lately I've been using Lynda.com to grow more knowledge of interactivity. It's all fun.

AIGAarizona: Definitely a plus to be more well-rounded these days. So what do you like to do when you're not designing?

    erictorres:
Draw, write and hang out with my family. I find myself obsessively sketching lately. Not sure if I should be worried yet. :)

AIGAarizona: Oh cool, you'll have to share some of your sketches on twitter! Who are your design heroes or which designers do you follow?

erictorres: Le Corbusier (art deco), Alphonse Mucha (art nouveau), Erte (fashion), Massimo Vignelli (designer), Chip Kidd (designer), those are just a few of the creatives whose work I admire and whose approaches to creativity I respect.

AIGAarizona: What would you say is your greatest accomplishment to date as a designer?

erictorres: Publishing my first book was a milestone for me. It represents self-initiated work that I was able to actually get done! The work I do for myself tends to mean the most, as it would never happen if I did not make the time for it.

AIGAarizona: I agree, as we also tend to be our own toughest client! How do you feel about the direction of the Phx design community?

erictorres: Lately, I think it's moving in a new, more focused direction. However, creatives still need to guard against apathetic views...some designers are not passionate for whatever reason. We need to find ways to help each other and support positive growth.

AIGAarizona: Definitely agree. Sometimes circumstances (and the economy) can be disheartening, but there's a lot of great talent...We'll work towards growth though! What are some of your favorite AIGA programs?

erictorres: Yes, speaking of growth: Say Anything has been my favorite event. It's been helpful from a creative and business perspective.

AIGAarizona: (have to plug - Say Anything - every second Monday of the month!) Ok, so fun question, what's your favorite typeface?

erictorres: Right now? Avenir. It's well-crafted and friendly. Great range of use. I could easily geek-out about fonts

AIGAarizona: Completely! I'm sure our non-design friends think we're so weird when it comes to fonts! Last question! Where can we find you?

erictorres: My Web site is: www.rynaga.com and I'm working on a new project for 2010: www.specimendesign.com.

AIGAarizona: Everyone go check out his stuff! You've done a lot for @AIGAarizona and we really appreciate it. Thanks again @erictorres for your time.

erictorres: You're welcome and thanks again! :D

Thanks everyone for tuning in to our November AIGA AZ Member of the Month Twinterview!

  • In October we recognized Randy Gregory II as our AIGA Arizona Member of the Month for all his great contributions to our chapter and volunteer efforts during Phoenix Design Week and our upcoming Art Auction. Below is a transcript of the "live" interview on Twitter:

    With Randy Gregory II
    Twitter:@PuuChuu

AIGAarizona: It's time for the AIGA Member of the Month Twinterview! This month we would like to recognize @PuuChuu for being a great volunteer!

PuuChuu: Thanks, I'm humbled to be the first member of the month, so fire away!

AIGAarizona: So what do you get out of being an AIGA volunteer and member?

PuuChuu: I get to be part of the design community. Being outside of #phx for 5 years, coming back and being embraced has been amazing.

AIGAarizona: And we're glad you're part of the design community! So what inspired you to become a designer in the first place?

PuuChuu: Hilariously enough, video games. I wanted to code them, then I realized I couldn't code, and then a professor turned me on to graphic design, and well, I just fell for it, and now, I love creating design.

AIGAarizona: Is there a particularly area of design that is your favorite? (web, print, motion)

PuuChuu: I enjoy web because it's so versatile, but, I love print design, because it's so limited, it means you have to be innovative.

AIGAarizona: So what do you like to do when you're not designing?

PuuChuu: Sleep? joke aside, I enjoy amatuer cooking, and I'm a huge comic book nerd, but usually my life revolves around design. Kinda sad, really.

AIGAarizona: Are you kidding, I love sleep! Who are your design heroes or which designers do you follow?

PuuChuu: Sagmeister is #1. His work is unique, emotional, & it blurs the fine art/design line. I also enjoy Carson, Weiner, & Victore.

AIGAarizona: Sagmeister does rule. What is your greatest accomplishment to date as a designer?

PuuChuu: I would say the #phxdw poster I designed. PHXDW has regenerated my urge to design, and I think my poster shows that to a T.

AIGAarizona: It's a cool poster. Speaking of #phxdw, how has the event affected your view of design in the Phoenix community?

PuuChuu: It makes me feel alive and that Phoenix can be a big design community.

AIGAarizona: I personally can't wait for it myself! What are some of your favorite AIGA programs?

PuuChuu: Say Anything, the chance to sit with other creatives and discuss is amazing, and I am really looking forward to the next.

AIGAarizona: (a chance for a Say Anything plug: Is Poster Design Still Relevant? Mon. at 6) Ok, fun question: what's your favorite typeface?

PuuChuu: YES. Poster design is very relevant, it gives us the chance to be really creative. And oh god, worst question ever...hmm...right now, Calluna. It's an elegant serif with ligatures that I have fallen for, and it's all over my site.

AIGAarizona: And last question! Where can we find you?

PuuChuu: I can be found on http://www.puuchuu.com, and yes, I'm looking. Thanks again for this honor, you've made my week.

AIGAarizona: You've done a lot for @AIGAarizona and #phxdw and we really appreciate it. Thanks again @PuuChuu for your time and congratulations!

    PuuChuu: @aigaarizona thanks again. @aigadesign & @aigaarizona are awesome.

AIGAarizona: We will be posting a transcript of our Twinterview with @PuuChuu at http://arizona.aiga.org and on our Facebook page. Also, thank you to @aigahouston for inspiration for the interview questions.
